Why we teach Music

At Egglescliffe CE Primary School we place musical study in high regard and view music as a powerful means to naturally develop children’s confidence, concentration, memory and co-ordination. We recognise music as a deeply personal and unique form of communication, which brings together intellect and feeling, developing personal expression, reflection and emotional development. We recognise the role of music as an integral part in the personal development of each individual child. Music is fully embedded throughout our curriculum and plays a fundamental part in children’s wider social and emotional wellbeing. Through actively engaging in a broad and diverse programme of musical study we provide all children with a wide variety of opportunities to listen to, create and experiment with music. Music is a universal language which we ensure is fully inclusive and accessible to all children. Through our music curriculum, we endeavour for children to explore culture and society, find a sense of community and belonging, and above all have the freedom to explore and develop their own innate creativity.

How we teach Music

Our music curriculum is carefully planned by our specialist music teacher to ensure progression across all year groups in the fundamental areas of listening, performing, composition and theoretical aspects. Strong foundations for musical understanding across all areas are well established during EYFS. Consolidation opportunities for these are regularly provided through our wider musical activities and then these fundamental skills are nurtured and developed through further progression in each year group. Our music teacher provides children with access to a wide variety of musical instruments to listen to, play and explore. She is a talented musician and provides an excellent role model for children, allowing them the wonderful opportunity to experience live music weekly.

Exceptionality of Music

  • Wide variety of musical learning on offer in addition to already fantastic curriculum. Private and group singing and instrument (brass, violin, guitar, piano) tuition provided within school.
  • Excellent links with secondary school, our children have opportunity to sit graded exams. Music students visit us to perform, providing our children with aspirational music role models.
  • Children experience live music weekly as part of their music lesson.
  • School choir which enriches our school community. Internal and external performances in the wider local community.
